Hi Rob,
I agree with Bryan about NVDA. It is free and a stable screenreader.
Here is a comparison:

Note that "Advanced screen reader users were more likely [along with
47.9% of respondents] to indicate that [free/low cost screen readers
(such as NVDA)] are viable alternatives to commercial screen readers."
Yet "Interestingly, only 242 (36.4%) of respondents reported using NVDA
[for Windows] or VoiceOver [for Macintosh]."
