I would suggest keeping the card in the machine unless there is any reason
not to keep it their.  The small square case it is packaged in, can be lost
very easily.

I  was recently provided a  device that requires a  SD card and the size
concerns me. Beside those tiny plastic cases they often come in what are you
advising students to do to keep up with them?

 

I've asked around about a  case but could not come up with an answer. I
appreciate your suggestions.
