Hello Wayne.
If you're looking for active help as opposed to listening to and reading tutorials, there are a few mailing lists I would recommend which have a mix of users on them and which do not have massive volumes of email traffic. As I'm sure you're aware, that's a hard balance to strike.
That said, I think both of these lists require approval, though I'm not certain, since I've been on them for years.
Macvisionaries+subscribe at googlegroups.com
Is one list, and seems more active than the second one.
There's also Mac4theblind
mac4theblind-subscribe at freelists.org
There are a lot of free resources out there to get you started as well, many of them are on Applevis. For example, on the home page, you will find a section dedicated to getting started with your first Mac. The other resources listed by others can also be helpful. I suppose it just depends on your learning style.
Hope this helps,
Scott

Subject: [Trainer-talk] Mac mailing lists
All,
I got my first mac over the weekend and am looking for a mailing list that I can subscribe to in order to learn more about the Mac and using Voiceover. I've seen several lists on this topic and wanted to see which list people liked. I am looking for one that has a good mix of beginning to advanced users who aren't afraid to put things in simple lingo.
Thanks,
Wayne Merritt
