Which version of JAWS is your student using? While I'm not able to veirfy this on the computer I am currently using, I remember hearing that Thunderbird recently went through a change which required a JAWS update to properly read the message list. If I'm correct about this, this has the unfortunate side effect of having earlier versions of JAWS not reading the message list.

I can't disagree with anything you have said. I have spent a good bit of time with Thunderbird over the past two weeks. It does work with JAWS, and NVDA, but I think NVDA does a better job. JAWS was always notifying me they thought this message and that message was spam, and it was intrusive, because most were false positives. NVDA did less of this and it wasn't as obtrusive. However fairly regularly, it froze and I had to wait for a minute or two to get it to come back. I may have set it wrong, but didn't see any spam filtering, and I tried messing with filters, and it was a pain at best. I finally got one set, I thought, but it didn't work, so who knows.
Monitoring all these lists, I need something that works quickly and smoothly. I have been using Eudora, but am having problems with Windows 10 setup. May have to give it up, will probably go to Outlook in the long run.

Yes, it is possible to configure Thunderbird e-mail to work with Jaws and NVDA but I don't recommend it. It is no longer supported by Mozilla directly. It's codebase will ultimately change and so there is no way to guarantee its continued accessibility on Windows. I have already noticed some stability issues with very large inboxes.

Also, the calendar application, lightning, is not accessible as far as I can tell.
if your clients are going to live on Windows 10, I think it is prudent they learn the built-in solution, Mail for Windows 10, before they learn third party e-mail clients.

JAWS released an update or was suppose to about two months back to fix some of those issues. Non the less I've often found that NVDA seems to do a better job with thunderbird. Although I think I have a student using JAWS 18 right now with Win 10.
