I believe the ability to turn off automatic number is a necessary skill.
I'm currently using Word 2010, but doubt it's much different in the later
versions:
>From a Word document screen, press alt+f, t to get to Options. I have seen
it happen that you have to press alt, then f, then t, so do that if the
alt+f, t combination fails.
In the list of options categories, arrow to proofing and press tab.
Press space on AutoCorrect options.
Press ctrl+tab twice to get to the autoformat as you Type page.
Press tab probably eight times to get to the Automatic Numbered list check
box and uncheck it.
Press enter to close, then shift+tab a few times to OK.
Much better with it off!!!

Janet,
This does not answer your first question, but to have the student place
answers below the questions without breaking the format they should make
sure they are at the end of the numbered paragraph and press shift+enter.
This adds a new line but does not make a new paragraph. To have the answers
stand out for the teacher the student can bold or italicize the answer.
Hope this helps,
Thomas

Greetings!
How do you remove automatic numbering in Word in just a part of the file
while retaining the numbers themselves? I know about going into Options and
then Proofing but I cannot figure out how to remove the numbering from a
portion of the file, and her MS Word is already set to not automatically
number or bullet.
Here is the actual situation: I have a student who gets files from a teacher
who is using auto numbering. I have explained to her to simply press enter
two times following/under each question and then input her answers but her
doing so does not remain constant and she then has a messy file. Suggestions
of how she can handle this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Janet
