[Trainer-Talk] command for keeping format of numbers but turning off auto numbering

Hello Dr Denise,

There are a couple methods that can be used but I don't think there is a single command for doing the conversion. There is a macro that can be used and you can add a shortcut key to the macro. Word needs to be permitted to run the macro. The following macro works if you paste it into the Visual Basic Editor using Alt with F11. You need to be in the code section of the editor. After adding the macro you can add a keystroke to it in the word options so that a single command will run the macro.

Sub ConvertAllAutoNumberToText()
If ActiveDocument.Lists.Count > 0 Then
Dim lisAutoNumList As List
For Each lisAutoNumList In ActiveDocument.Lists
lisAutoNumList.ConvertNumbersToText
Next
Else
End If
End Sub

The second method isn't done with a single command and it also involves opening the Visual Basic Editor.

Here is a quick way to convert numbered lists in Word to normal numbering. Tabs are used to keep the structure the same, and content starts at 1,.5 inches or wherever it did with auto numbering.

1. Open the document whose numbering you want to convert.
2. Press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
3. Press CTRL+G . This opens the Immediate window.
4. Type or paste the following in the Immediate window:
ActiveDocument.Range.ListFormat.ConvertNumbersToText
5. Press Enter .

The line of text to be typed or pasted into the Immediate window of the editor could be set up as an auto text entry so that it could be easily put into a document and then copied and pasted into the Immediate window.

Take care.

It stops the auto numbering but does nothing for the auto numbered words already ctrl shift n used to work but no longer--looking for another command to do that same thing as the kids need to keep the numbers but the auto numbering causes issues
