Dear Ned,

In my experience, yes, unfortunately, VoiceOver in iOS seems to handle a lot
of emoji characters more efficiently and accessibly with braille displays
than NVDA or JAWS can. 

I would try pressing Dots 3,6 chord (Space + dots 3,6) which is the
SayCharacter command for Focus 40 V users. Perhaps pressing that command 3
times quickly may yield the hex value of the emoji in question. Just my
two-cent work-around.

Having to work with clients who depend on their Braille display 100% of
their computer usage time, I ran into an issue of inaccessible emojis.  BTW,
we are using JAWS with Focus40 V display at the moment.

All workarounds I have tried did not help:

JAWS History - still shows blank cell instead of emoji description, as I had
hoped, while emoji characters are only spoken

Mode/Selector button + Routing key above the given cell - only speaks out
but does not display emoji description either

No keystroke on Braille display that would simulate Num Pad 5 three times
quickly to get the hex value of the character

 

Is switching to Apple products a better solution in general for Braille
display users?  If so, apart from the usual resources, are there any good
guides or tutorials I should look at?

 

If anybody faced anything similar in the past and is aware of any at least
partial solution, that'll be most appreciated!
