Thanks for the seconding of the factory reset. I have, unfortunately, been
down this road before where the well-intentioned have tried to help, but in
the process of doing so have created a Gordian knot that cannot be untied.
You can spend far, far more time trying to do that than starting with a
clean slate.
The owner of the device is definitely best equipped to tell you, straight
out, what they've been using it for and that gives you a very good idea
whether a reset will involve little other than setting up the Apple ID,
email account(s), and another thing or two versus being a major production
number with a ton of apps. My personal experience has been that it's the
former far more often than the latter.
