[Travelandtourism] Service dog in Costa Rica?

Good point,
I would perhaps equate much of CR with the conditions you described in that
part of Puerto Rico. Dog conditions are highly variable from country to
country, and region to region though. I mostly stayed near a medium sized
town in the central valley of Costa Rica called Atenas (Spanish for Athens).
I remember hungry dogs would wander around people's legs as they sat outside
at open bars and restaurants. The sort of dogs that might mostly just beg or
ignore people, but might chase off or snap at another ground-level animal.
This town wasn't a resort environment for the most part so far as I could
tell; but there were nice restaurants,, musical acts, and nearby parks to
visit--including a clean warm mountain stream to swim in. I was in the area
for research. Monte Verde is a wonderful place to visit for nature lovers,
and there is some cultural interest in the area. The natural area and
surrounding settlements are a legacy of a Quaker community from the U.S.
established during World War 2.
Yes, while I love dogs, I don't use one for travel. While I respect the
desire to travel everywhere with your pooch, I do recommend keeping up your
cane skills in order to be prepped for those circumstances when a dog may
not be so auspicious.
Sorry for my lack of board participation. I hope to be more involved in
the future. I've been incredibly busy with my own work, and to a lesser
extent with local NFB chapter activities.

Yes but it is also up to the person going, some of us only rely on our dogs
to get around, and if I started out by saying that I don't think you should
bring your dog there, someone would have jumped all over me.
I don't recommend anything that I have not been to yet.
Trevor has been to places, but he also if I remember correctly is not a
guide dog user, and thanked him for posting the information. That being said
anywhere you go and that includes the United States, you must be vigilant
about the safety of your dogs. I have my next door neighbor that has a
pitbull that I can say that he is bad news.
But again, until you have been there with you dog, then you don't know. It
all depends on where Mike wants to go, if he is going to areas like some
really poor parts of any location including in Puerto Rico where my
husband's family is, I wouldn't bring my guide dog there, because of the way
the dogs run around there, but I would bring him to the hotels, and other
areas of Puerto Rico, it all depends on where you are going.
