[blindkid] a couple of questions

Hey! I am a hygienist. Be careful about letting him ingest toothpaste. Of
course, a little isn't going to hurt but too much with affect his permanent
teeth estethically. They will be strong but have large yellow spots on
them. Try getting him to lie down so you can see in his mouth better too.
A dry toothbrush will do wonders! Oh, and my 10 year old still has me
either doing it or going behind her! LOL

I wonder if your child understands the concept that if he sucks on the
straw, he will get something to drink??? Perhaps you can try dipping the
straw into a drink, then put your finger over the top of the straw to create
a vacuum. This will allow some of the drink to stay in the straw. Then place
the straw into his mouth and release your finger. Now he will see that the
straw has something good to drink and may naturally suck on it for more. We
used to do this with all my kids when they were young. It may be worth a
try.....

Hello everyone,
I have a couple questions for the list:
1. Does anyone have any idea of the best way to teach our 5-year old
adopted child how to drink from a straw? He can drink from a sippy cup.
If you give him a straw, he wants to chew on it. Any suggestions would
be apreciated.
2. I'm not sure he has ever had someone brush his teeth before. If we
try at this point, he tries to eat the toothpaste and chew on the tooth
brush. So, there is very little actual tooth brushing going on.
Obviously, we will show him how to do this for himself eventually, but
he is not there yet.
Thanks!
