Hi,

Well I have not done this on a first meeting with a client, I will ask them if I feel I know them well enough about their preferred style of dress, and the type of clothing they are wearing for that session. Sometimes this can get some good insight.
I've also gotten around this with a client who is not trusting asking simple questions like what is your favorite color? Do you tend to dress in colors that you like to wear, such as your favorite color? That can also open up a dialogue.

For those who are therapist, when you need to administer a mental status exam how do you go about answering the questions that are visual in nature about the client? For example, one of the questions is what the person looks like, what they're wearing, their facial expressions. Thanks for any input and if you need clarification feel free to ask and I can clarify once I am at a computer.
