Dear Community Partners and parents,

We are very pleased to announce that we have added two additional presenters
to our Parent Education Event that will take place on Saturday, April 5th at
DORS-BESB, 184  Windsor Avenue, in Windsor. The event will be held from
10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The registration deadline has been extended to April
1st and the registration form is further below in this email. Special thanks
and appreciation go out to Elizabeth Rival, BESB Advisory Board Member and
President of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut for her
success in arranging for  Natalie Shaheen, Director of Education at the
National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute and Kimberly Tindall, a
recent graduate of the NFB's Louisiana Center for the Blind to join the
event.

Planning for the Future: 

Setting Up Lifelong Supports for your Child

Saturday, April 5, 2014  10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

.       A parent program on creating lifetime supports for your child.
Presented by individuals with expertise in this field. 

 

.       Topics include: guardianship, financial planning, special needs
trusts, wills, Medicaid, sibling involvement, social security, government
and community resources.

Directions:

.       From the south: I-91 North to exit 34. At the exit ramp proceed
straight ahead into the DORS-BESB parking lot. 

.       From the north: I-91 to exit 34.  At the exit ramp turn left onto
North Main Street (Hartford).  Go under the highway underpass, straight
through the traffic light, pass the gas station, and take a right into
BESB's parking lot.

 

Lunch will be provided.

Presenters (listed alphabetically):

 

Anne Burnham, Esq. 

.       Anne is an attorney at Jaconetta, Burnham & Wimer, LLC, in
Glastonbury, whose practice areas focus on estate planning, estate and trust
administration, probate matters and elder law. 

.       Anne has over 16 years of experience as a trust and estate attorney.

 

Hillary Dunn, Esq.

.       Hillary is an attorney at the Special Needs and Elder Law Practice
Group at Fletcher Tilton PC in Massachusetts. 

.       She previously worked at the Disability Law Center in Boston and
also served as the chairperson of the Massachusetts DDS Human Rights
Advisory Committee. 

.       Hillary has an older brother with Angelman Syndrome, and, as a
result of this experience, she has devoted her career to assisting
individuals with disabilities and their families. She is on the board of the
Massachusetts Sibling Support Network.

 

Cynthia Haddad, Certified Financial Planner

.       Cynthia is a Certified Financial PlannerR and a Director of Special
Needs Planning, a division of Shepherd Financial Partners. 

.       She has an adult brother with special needs. Cynthia is in charge of
educational initiatives at the Massachusetts Sibling Support Network. 

.       Cynthia is the co-author of The Special Needs Planning Guide: How to
Prepare for Every Stage of Your Child's Life (Brookes Publishing). 

 

Susan LaVenture, Executive Director of the National Association for Parents
of 

        Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI) 

.       Susan is an advocate for parents of children who are blind, visually
impaired, including those with multiple disabilities. She has worked in this
field for over 20 years. 

.       She initially became involved in advocacy when her youngest son,
Alex, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of infant eye cancer.

.       Susan is the Co-Director of a website for parents of children with
visual impairments.

Janette Peracchio, Family Specialist

.       Janette was a family specialist at New England Consortium of
Deafblind Projects, where she worked since 2002.

.       Janette worked at the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Foundation in Avon
for 7 years, helping families nationally who have children with CdLS acquire
needed services.

.       Janette is the parent of three children. Her daughter Sara had
Cornelia de Lange Syndrome and passed away in 2004 at the age of 23.  

Sonu Rangnekar, Consultant

.       Sonu has diverse experience in international development in the
areas of community development, livelihood improvement, public health, child
welfare and enterprise development programs in Asia, Africa and Latin
America.  

.       Her work has included United States Agency for International
Development (USAID), Aid to Artisans, Save the Children, and Population
Services International.

.       Sonu is the parent of a 17 year old student with special needs.

 

Natalie Shaheen, Director of Education, National Federation of the 

Blind (NFB) Jernigan Institute 

 

.       As Director of Education, Ms. Shaheen oversees the facilitation of
national education programs that serve blind students of all ages, parents
of blind children, educators, and the general public. Additionally, Ms.
Shaheen serves as a national resource on all aspects of the education of
blind students. 

.       Ms. Shaheen has extensive experience working with children with
multiple and significant disabilities as an educator, a home health care
professional, a recreation leader, and as an administrator. Ms. Shaheen is
passionate about ensuring that blind children (with and without additional
disabilities) receive a high quality education.

.       In addition to her professional experience, Ms. Shaheen has a
lifetime of living in the world as a blind person from which she draws
expertise.

 

Nancy L. Taylor

.       Nancy is currently an Education Advisor for the CT State Department
of Developmental Services, servicing as a resource to DDS families of school
age children.  

.       Nancy is currently a member of the statewide Parent Work Group under
the direction of the State Department of Education and had served on the
Connecticut State Advisory Council of Special Education.

.       Nancy has the opportunity to support families of children and adults
with disabilities in the future planning process for various transition
periods of one's life.

Kimberly Tindall

.       Ms. Tindal is a Vocational Rehabilitation client of BESB and Vice
President of the East of the River Chapter of the National Federation of the
Blind (NFB) of Connecticut. 

.       Ms. Tindall is a recent graduate of the NFB's Louisiana Center for
the Blind. She lives independently in a shared housing arrangement.

.       She will share how with training and self-determination, she was
able to gain the confidence to move ahead to achieve her independent living
goals.

Robin Wood

.       For the last twelve years, Robin has worked for the CT Department of
Developmental Services in a variety of positions.  She currently works
directly for the Commissioner of DDS in the role of Director of Family
Support Strategies and Advocacy.

.       Robin has been a special education teacher in a public school, an
executive director of a non-profit agency providing residential and
employment services to adults with developmental disabilities and a vice
president of research and development at a CT agency specializing in
advocacy, education and technical assistance in all areas of employment.
She also co-owned an Educational Consultation organization.

.       Robin's most important learning has occurred through her experiences
as a  parent of a child with autism.
