JOB SUMMARY
 
The University of Connecticut invites applicants for an Assistive
Technology Coordinator. Under the general direction of the Associate

Assistive Technology Coordinator will provide consultations and trainings
on the accessibility of technology and assistive technology, developing
useful resources and tools, and helping to implement policies that
promote the accessibility of technologies at UConn.
 
The successful candidate is expected to work with a fair amount of
independence, within the goals and objectives established by the CSD. The
incumbent will be sensitive to and have an understanding of the diverse
academic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of University students
and staff while establishing and maintaining a positive working
relationship with relative constituents. The Assistive Technology
Coordinator assists in ensuring that all University entities comply with
the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
of 1990, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and other relevant state and
federal legislation, including ICT standards and guidelines and WCAG
2.0.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
 
1.  Serves as the primary technical consultant for assistive technology
2.  used at CSD and across UConn; resolves problems and addresses concerns
3.  related to student services and access involving assistive technology;
4.  addresses issues that arise regarding content access, alternate media and
5.  captioning.

8.  Collaborates with existing University IT departments, to implement
9.  the use of classroom-based and/or standard University technologies to
10.coordinate accommodations and ensure course content access; collaborate
11.with faculty and staff to remediate course materials and resources to
12.ensure minimum levels of accessibility.

15.Collaborates with experts from IT, Procurement and the Office of
16.Institutional Equity (OIE) on creating and implementing accessibility
17.technology standards, best practices and uniform business processes to
18.ensure a minimum level of compliance to tech-related accessibility laws
19.and national standards across the University.

22.Investigates, evaluates and pilots new assistive technology products,
23.identifies trends, evaluates need for and recommends acquisition of
24.technology; ; communicates with vendors regarding pricing and usability
25.of various technologies to be used by students with disabilities;
26.performs cost/benefit analysis of technology ; develops budget
27.recommendations for assistive technology.

30.Conducts outreach activities designed to promote CSD’s technology
31.initiatives to faculty and staff;; collaborates with CETL and ITS staff
32.to provide faculty and staff training on how to make content accessible,
33.the accessibility of teaching/learning technology, along with the use of
34.assistive technology in the classroom. Manages CSD’s assistive
35.technology (AT) program (CSDTech), which oversees the provision of
36.technology-related accommodations, including but not limited to:
37.alternate media, technology-based notetaking assistance, text-to-speech
38.software, and captioned media; recommends and implements appropriate
39.technologies based on student’s functional limitations.

42.Supervises the CSDTech team members in conducting technology needs
43.assessments for students with disabilities and develops customized
44.technology services suites, including both assistive technology and
45.learning technology as appropriate; creates technology instructional
46.modules as needed to support student use of AT.

49.Oversees the administration of the technology equipment loan program
50.by the CSDTech team; maintains a current inventory of hardware, software,
51.supplies and other equipment needed for the operation of the assistive
52.technology support program; monitors equipment for
53.upgrades/damages/viruses; troubleshoots problems and arranges for repair
54.or replacement; performs minor maintenance and repair.; Implements
55.replacement cycle and upgrade plans to ensure minimum disruption to
56.services; collaborates with SAIT to maintain security of assistive
57.technology. Technology includes but is not limited to smart pens, reader
58.pens, recorders, laptops, tablets and FM systems

61.Interviews, hires, trains and supervises graduate and undergraduate
62.student employee staff to assist with the implementation of assistive
63.technology support program. Develops work schedules as well as writes and
64.maintains CSDTech Team Student Employee Handbook (i.e. “how to”
65.guide).

68.Collects and analyzes data related to assistive technology use
69.semester to semester using an Access database; reports on data for CSD
70.annual report; uses data for making recommendations regarding technology
71.purchases, upgrades, use and sun-setting.

75.WordPress and HTML for content updates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
 
1.  Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Educational Technology,
2.  Computer Science, Rehabilitation, Vocational Education, or related field,
3.  or equivalent training and experience.

6.  Four years of IT experience, which must include at least 2 years of
7.  experience with assistive technology (AT), or a Master's Degree in a
8.  related field and 2 years of AT experience.

11.Demonstrated experience with the functionality and limitations of
12.current assistive technology and accessible features embedded within
13.technology, including Microsoft and Apple applications, Adobe Acrobat
14.Pro, smart pens, Read & Write, and other assistive technologies
15.(e.g., Dragon, Jaws, etc.).

18.Demonstrated experience in evaluating and recommending assistive
19.technology or accessibility features of mainstream technology to provide
20.access.

APPOINTMENT TERMS
