PERKINS INTERNATIONAL
When Yasmine came to the Low Vision Center at Santa Casa Hospital in Brazil at age 4 she did not speak and had major developmental delays. Yasmine lost 90 percent of her vision as an infant and her mother assumed she could not learn without being able to see or communicate.
Ana Lucia Rago, who has worked at the Low Vision Center since 1998, convinced Yasmine’s mother to send her to school and start therapies. Today Yasmine is an enthusiastic fourth grade student who uses a magnification device to read the same materials as her classmates.
Rago has been astounded by Yasmine’s progress: “She read a book and she told me the story of the book in her own words.”
