[NFB-InTheKitchen] separating eggs without an egg separator

This is a technique I learned many many years ago. Wash your hands really well and then break the egg into your fingers. Spread your fingers enough to let the white drip out of your fingers but keep the yolk in your hand. Of course you do this over a bowl to catch the whites and then have a separate bowl for the yolks. It sounds gross but it works really really well!

I do not have an egg separator, and am wondering if there's another way to do it safely without getting lots of shells in the bowl. I would appreciate some advice. This would also be good because I plan to make meringues and other such things. Thanks so much!
