Hey, Jody!
So proud of diving into braille and getting that certificate. The next
thing is getting a braille book you would love to read, and do it, use
brings the experience.
I think you are right in all you are saying. Add to that, all thehome
devices that are supposed to run everything for you.
Conveniences are great, but when you turn those conveniences into
necessities is when you start to get into trouble.
Also add to this the entitlement culture of today.

Well I do think that we did become more independent and resourceful as a
result of having to do everything ourselves. Yes, I remember having to go to
the English department to find out what books I would need for the next
semester classes so that I could order them on real to real tape from RSVP.
When I asked the lady at the desk what books would be used for the class she
told me oh the list is over there on the bulletin board. Duh
No students don’t have to do any of that legwork. It is all done for them.
They are provided escorts to class no takers and special accommodations for
tests. I think the consequence of this is that they don’t learn the
independence that we did learn. They go off to their first job expecting all
kinds of accommodations.
What is frustrating is that the unemployment among blind people is still
70%. The accommodations and social attitudes might have changed but I’m
afraid the independence and self-reliance level has decreased to the point
where people are finding it hard to keep a job.
Yes, I still have one of those APH handy cassette players also. I was not
as lucky as you to learn braille as a child. I graduated from high school
being able to read it a second grade level. I did finally complete the
Hadley course in UAB three years ago and I have my certificate hanging on
the wall in my living room. Rather late than never
