Hello Pam,
The line thank you! I really love braille. Of course my reading speed is slow but I figure it increases every day I practice. I do envy people who learn braille when they were very young because they can read so fast.

Yes, I remember having to go to the English department to find out what books I would need for the next semester classes so that I could order them on real to real tape from RSVP. When I asked the lady at the desk what books would be used for the class she told me oh the list is over there on the bulletin board. Duh

I think the consequence of this is that they don’t learn the independence that we did learn. They go off to their first job expecting all kinds of accommodations.

I did finally complete the Hadley course in UAB three years ago and I have my certificate hanging on the wall in my living room. Rather late than never

>> My parents also helped on the backend ordering, once I did the initial stuff. I had books in braille and on reel-to-reel. Remember those sony 4-track recorders? I bought mine from another student for $120 and still have it in good working order.
>>
>> I took notes with slate and stylus just as quickly as those students using a pen, and used spiral notebooks purchased, you guessed it, at the book store. The braille held up years after I was out of college. I had a notebook for each class.

>> I remember once in a trek across campus, I had probably a 12 block walk at most, the elastic broke in my cane, and I was closest to the foreign language office. So the cane and I straggled in and I borrowed tape from the secretary's desk to hold the cane together long enough to get me back to the dorm which then was only about three blocks further.

>> Hello Robert,
>>
>> Thank you very much for the welcome! I think that one thing that we all have in common as seniors is that we remember a time before the ADA, I DEA in the rehab act of 1973. Back in the olden days we remember a time when you either got by or got out and there was very little accommodation for us. I must confess I am very envious of all of the assistance that students get nowadays. Oh how my life would’ve been so much different if I could’ve gotten the same accommodations.
