                                Weekly Highlights from TBBC

                                April 3, 2020

                                TALKING BOOK &
                                BRAILLE CENTER

A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW JERSEY STATE
LIBRARIAN

This is a most serious time in everyone’s
life. Listening to a book is one escape each of us needs at this time.

Unfortunately, the New Jersey State Library
Talking Book & Braille Center (TBBC) as well as other libraries across the
state is closed and we cannot send to you the digital cartridge books you
love and need. But our staff is working at home and trying to help you
whenever we can.

We have spoken in the past about how to get
books to you in other ways than on a digital cartridge. This is an
opportunity for you and others to help you get to your books differently.

I began using my cellphone to listen to
books a few months ago. As an avid listener, I find it very easy and
hopefully you will to.

Beginning this week, we will send out a
weekly mini-newsletter to update you of events and hopefully give you some
information to get everyone through this time in our lives.

Take care and please be safe.

                                Thank you,

                                Mary

Mary L. Chute, New Jersey State Librarian

                                STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS

                                Adam: Michael Connelly’s Suicide Run
(DB97953). Three new stories about LAPD Detective Harry Bosch. As a fan of
this series, I can never get enough Bosch stories
                                .
                                Liz K: Tara Westover’s Educated: A Memoir
(DB90188). Intriguing read about a girl who grew up in a very strict
survivalist Mormon family with little formal education and her journey to
acquire a PhD at Oxford. For readers who do not mind violence, because some
of the descriptions of abuse Tara and her siblings withstood at the hands of
their parents and older siblings were almost unbelievable. The fact that
this story is true is one of the many reasons I would recommend it. It was
an eye opener for sure. It is also available in Spanish (DB95267)

Gail: Tarryn Fisher’s The Wives (DB98148).
Imagine that your husband has two other wives. None of you know each other,
and you can see your husband only one day a week. But one day, while doing
his laundry, you find an appointment reminder for a woman you realize is
another of the wives.

                                BARD MOBILE APP

With BARD Mobile for iOS or Android, you can
play the audio materials on your smartphone or tablet. If your device is
connected to a refreshable Braille display through Bluetooth, you can also
read the Braille materials available on BARD.
The BARD Mobile app is available as a free
download through App Store or Google Play.
Before you can use BARD Mobile, you must be
signed up to use BARD. You can apply for BARD at:
https://nlsbard.loc.gov/NLS/ApplicationInstructions.html

                                Notes on Using BARD Mobile:

a.. Sign in with your BARD user name and
password. You'll only need to do this the first time you use the app. The
BARD Mobile app will remember your BARD user credentials.

a.. Books and magazines can be quite large
to download (50MB - 200MB), so be sure to manage downloads carefully,
especially if you have a limited data plan. You can set BARD Mobile to only
download over Wi-Fi.

a.. Your progress through a book is not
updated across iOS devices. So, if you start listening to a book on your
iPhone, your progress will not be updated on your iPad.

a.. You can have up to 5 iOS devices
registered with the BARD Mobile app.

                                AROUND THE STATE’S LIBRARIES

All New Jersey public libraries are closed,
but, like us, librarians are still working and connecting with their
communities. Public libraries are doing virtual storytimes for children,
reading books for adult listeners, highlighting author interviews, and other
creative programs. Public libraries also have many online resources, such as
e-books, audiobooks, magazines, music, films, and TV shows.
If you’re not sure what your local library
is doing, or how to get a library card to borrow online materials, just call
or email us and we’ll find your local library and see how we can help you
get a library card. Many libraries are letting you get a library card over
email, and we can help with that if you’d like.
Here are some other things that we found
that we thought you’d like:
Tara Sullivan from the Long Branch Free
Public Library is reading aloud the first chapter of Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer’s Stone. If you enjoyed that, you can download the audiobook from
BARD. https://www.facebook.com/86892984369/videos/2530795173845286/

Tierney Miller from the Cherry Hill Public
Library does an adult story time, reading aloud “Lusus Naturae,” a short
story by Margaret Atwood. https://youtu.be/zUUj_ls_tdU

NJ.com has a great article highlighting some
of the other things New Jersey public libraries are doing:

                                COVID-19

If you’re looking for up-to-date information
about COVID-19, the New Jersey State Library has put together a terrific
