[NJTechDiv] FW: using reddit with or without JAWS

Hi, Mario,
Miss Ruth here!
Missing Posts on Reddit:Ah, I think I see what's happening with missing posts on Reddit. It has to do with the unique way Reddit formats its comment threads.
Anyone can post a comment if they belong to a sub-reddit, or community within reddit.
Once a member posts a comment, they're considered the "OP" or "Original Poster" of the comment. Underneath that original comment will be other members' comments.
The reason some comments are missing is because Reddit inserts a tiny line connecting the original post to someone's comment on the post. It's a way of saying, this comment relates to this original post.
Here's the part that is probably not detectable by JAWS. Each time someone makes a comment on Reddit, there will be a tiny plus or minus sign next to the comment.
This gives people the option to collapse the comments when there are so many, it's hard to keep track of the topic. Some threads have hundreds of comments, so I think it's their way of trying to organize it all.
Direct Message to Community Creator:I don't know how to get in touch with whoever created a particular community; however, each community has several moderators. They can probably steer you in the right direction. I believe they are listed toward the bottom of the page on the lower right hand side of the screen.
Posting Comments Yourself:I think you have to join a sub-reddit or community to be able to post yourself, and Reddit has weird rules about having a certain amount of "karma points" before you can create a post. They say they do it to prevent spam. I think you get karma points by "upvoting" other peoples' comments.
Sub-Reddit Called "New to Reddit":There is a sub-reddit that might be helpful called New to Reddit. Hmm, but as I scroll through it, it may just be too much information all at once! Lots to take in and it may not be helpful. Stick a pin in that one for later, is my vote.
Other Possible Resource:Maybe NFB National has done a Boutique Instruction Session on Reddit using JAWS? I can't say for sure, but those sessions are in-depth and always helpful.
Assistance from Chancey FleetAnother resource to consider is Chancey Fleet, Assistive Technology Coordinator at the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library at the New York Public Library.
She is based in New York City, so just ask her if she would be able to help you, as a New Jersey resident. I assume she will, as she's an NFB member as well. Her email address is: ChanceyFleet at nypl.org
Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey (VLANJ)Last but not least, the wonderful VLANJ can help you with one on one personalized tech training.1:1 Personalized Technology Training - Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey

Hi Miss Ruth or anyone who can offer some help,

Since you do not use JAWS, I’m hoping you can help me with a few
questions about using Reddit.

I’d like to go to a specific subreddit (community) and easily find the
latest posts. However, I’ve noticed that some posts appear while others
in between seem to be missing. Could you explain how to view the posts
properly?

I also sometimes want to read the comments on a particular post, but I’m
not sure how to do that with JAWS.

Finally, I’m interested in sending a direct message (DM) to the person
who created the community (I don't know if this person is known as the
user?), either in response to one of their posts or as part of a
conversation with them.

I am using a Windows 11 desktop computer, not an iPhone or Android
phone, just to be clear.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hi Tracy, Mario and All,

Miss Ruth here! I'm wondering if Mario is new to reddit and asking what
it is about, or has already been using it and is searching for something
specific.

I use reddit without a screen reader, and generally subscribe to
specific "sub-reddits" of topics that interest me. For example, r/blind
<https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/> is a sub-reddit or community of people
interested in blindness related topics.

I also like to look at cute cat pictures <https://www.reddit.com/r/cat/>
there, but these are generally just pictures with no Alt Text.

There is a sub-reddit I find amusing called "Bone Apple Tea" <https://
www.reddit.com/r/BoneAppleTea/> which is how some people erroneously
pronounce the term "Bon Appetit." It's a compendium of ways people tend
to butcher various phrases or words they are unfamiliar with. Just a fun
diversion!

Take care,

I’m reaching out to ask whether anyone on this listserv (or anyone you
know) have experience using reddit.com, either with a screen reader
(such as JAWS, NVDA, or Narrator) or without one.

I’ve been searching for a clear, high-quality text-based tutorial on
using Reddit effectively, but I haven’t had much success so far, whether
searching with or without a screen reader. Any insights or
recommendations you might have would be greatly appreciated.
