Google Docs: 

Creating Comments

This week, we are going to begin our series on comments. Now, comments are an increasingly important skill in today’s world. With so many people working on collaborative documents, being able to interact with teachers and peers using comments is slowly becoming a workplace prerequisite.

Now, for our purposes, comments are a great accessibility feature. In Google Docs, they not only allow our learners complete access to peer feedback, (something that many of us could have only dreamed of 5 years ago) but they are also an amazing alternative to highlighting, underlining or annotating text.

We will start our series with Google Docs and then transition over to Microsoft Word. Here is the schedule for the next few weeks.

Creating Comments in Google Docs

Ok so we starting with creating comments before reading comments. . . kind of weird, I know, but the reason is because creating comments in Docs is a piece of cake. . . that is if you know how to select text. If not... you already know. . . Screen Reader Curriculum.

Step 1: Select Your Text

Ok so you know how to select text so, step one is, well, select some text. Remember that the text you select is your text that you’d like to comment on.

Step 2: Make Your Comment

Once you’ve selected your text, we can make our comment. It is only one key command.

Make a comment: Ctrl + Alt + M

How do you remember that? Well, you can think of "M" for "make" a comment. Once you perform that key command, a comment dialog box will appear.

Step 3: Type and Post

You can type in whatever you’d like your comment to be, and then tab to "Post Comment".

That’s it! You’re done. You can continue on to make more comments on your document.

This full-day in-person workshop will teach professionals in the field of blindness basic screen reader skills needed to read, write, and edit text; navigate the internet and how to approach users who are resistant to screen reader instruction.
