Lynn,
I'm going to comment on the abacus as a mathematics learning aid.  I 
can't speak for your daughter and whether it would be appropriate to 
continue to pursue the abacus.  However, its value is that it actually 
is a great method for teaching a student the steps in solving a math 
problem.  I was never particularly good with math as a kid but I did 
pick up the abacus well enough to solve basic math problems accurately.
