[Ct-nfb] Happy Thanksgiving

Good morning all,
Eileen, I must confess I missed your original comment, but you should know that at one time or another we all experience demeaning situations, the thing is to just ignore it, and move on. Yes it's very sad that people may not accept us for ourselves, and sometimes they think we're not capable of doing something which we've done several times over, but the thing to try and remember is to show them the patients and understanding because although it's sometimes hurtful, I truly think people don't mean to be rude it's just that they don't understand
For me it's different, because of Janet's disability and my Father in law's age and hearing disability I have developed a care taker roll, although Janet's vision is fortunately still good, her other disabilities are becoming more evident, and forcing me to take a different type roll.
I'm telling you all this because we as a blind community must take the time to educate those around us. Not with arrogance or sarcasm, but with patients, Please understand I'm not saying we should be puppets for anyone but we should remember that, as frustrating it is for us to gain our acceptance & equality, it's just as difficult for the sighted folks to understand what it is we can actually do.
It's a very delegate balance sometimes it's important to kind of swallow our pride, for me if or when I experience a humble or disappointing adventure, I have learned to just laugh it off, and move on. there are times however when I need to remind myself that I can do anything I choose to.
I hope this helps a little, because I went down with Janet to weigh my Father in law I kind of lost my original train of thought, so forgive me if this turns in to my usual rambling or ranting.
Be well all
Rich

 Hi, Eileen!
Yes, voice inflections say a lot as well, and it's true that it's not what they say, but how they say it.  I totally agree with  you.

Hi, Eileen and Everyone!
Yes, it could be very demeaning when people treat you like a child.  My relatives are okay with me, but I have more trouble with strangers.  For example, one time my cousin and I were in Costco and we were sampling different foods.  There was one particular item that had a toothpick in it and the person handing out the food said to my cousin, "Tell her there's a toothpick in it," to which I replied, "You already did, mam."  I had a slight smile on my face when I said this, but it's very degrading when people speak to anyone this way.  Then when a friend tries to tell a waitress or waiter what I want, I interrupt her and tell them myself.  Then when the waiter goes away, I just tell them to please not speak for me, but I try to tell them in a nice tone.  They understand and apologize profusely and realize how wrong they were.  I, of course, accept their apology and move on.
There's a way to be assertive and be nice about it, but if they persist, then you have to be more firm with these people.  There's a saying which is "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."
Anyway, that's my take on the situation and hope this helps you.
